Seth Godin Challenges Real Estate Agents

Seth Godin Challenges Real Estate Agents

The members of the KCM Crew are big fans of branding guru Seth Godin. We are looking forward to seeing Seth deliver his Keynote address at the InfusionCon marketing conference in April in Arizona. Today, we want to share some of his thoughts on the real estate profession.

In a blog post last week, Quality of production, Seth warned professionals that they have to realize their value is not measured in the same way it has been in the past. What the consumer expects has changed. He explains:

“It’s entirely possible that you are very good at (and have the tools to perform) a job that was really difficult to do a while ago.

The problem is that some difficult things keep getting easier to do.”

He talked of television producers, wedding photographers and chefs. He also challenged real estate professionals:

“Even people who sell real estate have discovered that much of what they did all day is now being done, sorted and presented, for free, in real time, online.

That doesn’t mean that the game is over. What it does mean is that we have to figure out how to obsess over things that are truly difficult. Access to tools alone is not sufficient.”

We agree with Seth. What the consumer requires of a real estate professional has changed dramatically. To help agents understand this change and learn what will drive the industry moving forward, we’ve created a free eGuide titled Unlocking the Secrets of Real Estate’s New Market Reality. It is amazing that so many agents are reluctant to change though they have seen significant decline in their income and steady loss in their share of business to younger agents who are embracing changes and technology. What do we call an agent who does the same thing over and over again when it clearly doesn’t work? Broke!

Yes, these marketing trends are changing throughout all industries!
I’m involved in real estate, however, in creative real estate investing of residential property. And the internet and the marketing has changed all that as well. So, people have to stay up with the times and get as much education as they can.
And like all businesses, real estate investing is all about marketing. So, if you’re going to get into real estate investing understand that marketing can be far more important than other parts of the business such as rehabbing, dream team, access to money, etc. If you haven’t found a deal, all the rest doesn’t matter.
