    JS Smith Dice:

Even more perverse are cruel and negligent owners of animals who leave them behind to starve and die behind a fence or in a deep basement they cannot escape. Such an “animal lover” left cats behind under these circumstances and one young car, nearly dead, managed to crawl through a small opening in the fense where I tried to give her food and water and warm shelter for 24 hours…too late. She was unable to life her back legs from probable organ damage. I could see no sign of extenal injury. The owner had left them — without food or water and only returned five weeks later. I caled animal control because I feared other animals might be trapped on the property, but because the owner had padlocked the two gates? They could do nothing. They were able to take the poor animal from me and mercifully give her a shot to put her out of her misery.

when the propery sold, two dead cats were found in the basement that had been too weak to crawl out. So there are worse things you may find — things that may break your heart and that any person with common sense would report to the Humane Society — even after the fact.
